What is cosmelan®?

Cosmelan® is a once-off chemical peel to remove unwanted pigment from the skin.

It is applied in clinic, followed by a 4-month home treatment protocol. When followed correctly, cosmelan® is one of the safest and most effective treatments to remove pigment and help prevent new patches forming.

How does cosmelan® depigmentation work?

The treatment mechanism is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase, a basic enzyme required in the melanin (pigment) formation process. The cosmelan® formula blocks and changes the action of the tyrosinase enzyme.

What are the benefits of cosmelan® depigmentation?

  • Highly effective treating all types of melasma including deep-seated or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) when program is completed correctly with medical support as indicated

  • Treats pigmentation that has failed to resolve after traditional topical skin-lightening products or superficial clinical peels

  • Effective for acne patients left with PIH after the active acne has resolved

  • Does not contain hydroquinone or TCA for safe and continuous use

  • Can be used on all skin types

  • Rapid and easy depigmenting action

  • Rejuvenation and brightening of the skin

  • High safety margin

Any Questions?

When is the best time to have cosmelan®?

cosmelan® treatment can be performed at any time of the year, but we advise autumn or winter when sun exposure is not as intense or prolonged. If you decide to treat in the summer, you must take even greater care to avoid the sun, and consistently apply sunscreen we recommend such as melan 130+ pigment control.

How can I prevent the appearance of pigment spots after the treatment?

If any pigment-triggering factors apply to you - think contraceptives, pregnancy, summer season, post-depilation, post-acne, post-peel, under photosensitising treatments, and more- a clinical grade daily treatment routine is essential. We advise combining a depigmentation treatment, such as melan tran3x, with a high photoprotector such as melan 130+ pigment control to help keep your skin bright and clear.

What about downtime?

Downtime differs for each and every client.

Most clients will start their shedding phase day 4 which will generally last most intensely until day 6. Redness can last up to 4 weeks following the initial treatment, as your new cells are being brought after the peeling stage and the skin is regenerated from within,

What happens if I stop using the homecare Cosmelan creams?

The homecare regime is part of the treatment and you will not get the expected results if you cease or are inconsistent with use.

Not applying cosmelan 2 depigmenting cream results in unregulated melanocytes, and a persistently uncontrolled and excessive production of melanin. Pigmented patches will reappear as the skin layers are renewed and melanin migrates to the surface.

Not applying the required sunscreen, melan 130+ pigment control, will result in pigmentation return as the skin is more receptive to external aggressions over the course of the treatment.

How long does cosmelan® treatment take? And last?

The cosmelan® method consists of four phases which are all essential to achieve treatment goal.

Phase 1 is the application of the depigmentation mask and its intensive effects.

Phases 2, 3 and 4 involve treatment at home with the prescribed products.

The total duration of treatment is around 6 months, that can change based on each client’s individual pigmentation challenges.

Following the active treatment stages is the stablisation phase, which ideally is one year to make sure the first summer is included. Long term success depends on how well the protocol is followed. Sunscreen remains essential to protect your cells from UVA and UVB radiation.

How long until the full effect? Can I stop once I see a change?

The most significant change takes place a few weeks after applying the mask in Phase 1. Skin texture improves and pigmented spots decrease noticeably - but this can give a misleading sense that the treatment goal has been reached.

Although the melanin has been removed from the skin’s layers, the origins of the problem remain.

The melanocyte, a cell where melanin is produced, is still uncontrolled and continues to produce pigment in excess.

To re-educate the melanocyte and control this overproduction, it is essential to complete all treatment phases so that the cell returns to a normal activity level to help stop pigmented spots appearing.
